Australia runs on diesel engine power. Diesel vehicles are used across a number of industries, from huge mining corporations to small businesses, thanks to their reputation as being reliable and long-lasting. The latest vehicles have become cleaner and greener with the growing use of SCR technology and AdBlue. As Australian AdBlue suppliers, we’re here to share exactly what it is and why you need it.
What is AdBlue?
AdBlue is the fluid used in the catalytic converter, which is fitted to the exhaust system of many diesel vehicles. AdBlue is designed to break down harmful nitrogen oxides in diesel vehicle exhausts. Rather than being added directly to the fuel, it’s placed in a separate tank and then sprayed into the catalytic converter where it reacts with the engine exhaust.
AdBlue is completely harmless and is a high purity urea solution. If you’re worried about using AdBlue, you really don’t need to be – it’s non-flammable, non-hazardous and all that’s required a quick wash of the hands if you spill it.
Why do you need AdBlue?
AdBlue is able to convert harmful emissions into nitrogen and steam, which goes a long to reducing emissions. Nitrogen oxides cause smog and can impact on long-term health - which is why AdBlue is an important development. If your diesel vehicle is fitted with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology, you’re required to use AdBlue. These days, more and more cars, trucks and other vehicles are using SCR technology to meet the requirements for the reduction of nitrogen oxides.
How does AdBlue work?
AdBlue is added to your vehicle into a separate tank and then sprayed onto the exhaust gasses once they leave the engine. It reacts with the nitrogen oxides and turns the toxic fumes it into harmless nitrogen and water. Although AdBlue isn’t necessary to make the engine work, in most vehicles with SCR technology the engine will stop working efficiently if AdBlue isn’t detected.
