What Are Solids in Grease And What Do They Do
Grease is a type of lubricant that is considered a semi-solid. The oil is generally emulsified with a thickener which produces the initial high viscosity. Upon application of shear the viscosity drops down to a similar viscosity of the base oil used in the grease. This change in the grease viscosity is called shear thinning and is the major characteristic of grease. The three main components in grease are base oils, thickeners, and additives.
The base oil in grease is the lubricating element in the product. It is the largest component, making up somewhere between 80 to 97% by weight. Industrial greases are usually made up of mineral oil, synthetic oil, or a combination of both. The thickener is the property in grease that makes it a solid or semi-fluid composition i.e. thickens up the base oil. A great visualisation is like a sponge holding water. The most common thickener used in grease is lithium soap. Other substances that can be used are aluminium, calcium soap, clay and polyurea. All of these substances can be used as a thickener alone or in combination, depending on the product and it’s intended application. Last but not least, additives either enhance properties already in grease or create new ones. Additives make up the smallest component of a grease product.
Sinopec HPXT Grease
Sinopec HPXT Grease is an extreme pressure, heavy-duty wheel bearing and chassis grease, formulated with a lithium complex soap thickener and high quality mineral base oil. It contains rust and oxidation inhibitors, EP and anti-wear additives to ensure excellent performance and long life, even in severe service conditions such as high temperatures, shock loading and where water contamination is possible.
Sinopec HDLC Mining Grease
Heavy Duty LC Mining Grease is an extreme pressure grease formulated with a lithium complex soap thickener and high viscosity mineral base oil and is available in NLGI 1 and NLGI 2 grades. It contains rust and oxidation inhibitors, EP and anti-wear additives, as well as 4% of solids including molybdenum disulfide (MoS2 or ‘moly’), which provide additional wear protection especially under the severe vibrating or oscillating conditions that are found in many mining applications.
Premium Mining Grease
Sinopec Premium Mining Grease is a super high performing, extreme pressure grease designed for extra heavy-duty, off-road and mining applications. Formulated with an advanced lithium complex soap thickener and high viscosity hydrotreated base oil, it is available in NLGI 1 and NLGI 2 grades. It contains rust and oxidation inhibitors, EP and anti-wear additives to protect against wear under shock loading conditions, as well as 4% solids, which provide additional wear protection especially under the severe vibrating or oscillating conditions that are found in many severe mining applications. This grease has exceptional ‘staying power’ under extreme operating conditions, and shows excellent resistance to water washout and spray-off, ensuring extended service life.
